This image from Ben and Katie’s engagement session in Stanley Park is a pretty good example of what we mean by those two words.

It’s a calm photo where Ben and Katie don’t have to fight too much over the attention of the eye. There just isn’t much else to focus on.

Two thirds is just empty sky, or negative space as it’s often called. An emptiness that I think is important to achieve the calm we’re looking for in this photo. If the crop was closer – say, just above the mountains – the picture would have a different feel to it, as the objects would take up more of the frame. Not necessarily making it a worse picture, but giving it different feel.

I’ve placed Katie and Ben a bit on the right in the frame. If the boat in the background wasn’t there, I probably would have composed the photo so that Ben and Katie we’re centred. But with the boat on the left, I think the two objects balance each other out nicely.

The square format is something we don’t use too often, but sometimes it’s fun to mix it up and I thought it suited this photo pretty well.

This picture was one of many that we liked from that session. All the credit to Katie and Ben though – they were excellent models.

After spending an hour in Stanley Park with Katie and Ben, we concluded that they are pretty much the perfect couple. Successful, good looking and super nice people. And a perfect match for each other.

They’ll be getting married in Vancouver this summer.

Photography in Stanley Park takes on a new twist when it’s snowy and cold. But when it’s still a bit sunny and the couple wants to wear t-shirts (even when it’s freezing temperatures), you’ve got yourself a recipe for success.

Katharina and Dennis are from Germany. They have been living in Vancouver for a while, and they wanted some nice pictures to remind them of their time in our great city.

The story behind how Bernadette and Rowan met one another is the closest to a Hollywood movie we’ve heard to date.

Long story short, and minus a lot of the personal details, they met on a flight between Toronto and Vancouver. Bernadette was in her seat, saw a ‘hot guy’ cruising towards her down the aisle, and wanting for this lad to sit next to her, he did.

The rest is history, and they were married at the Vancouver Rowing Club a few months later.

There are a few pictures that look like they could have been taken in a field, but really, it’s along the Seawall. Deceptive!

Lisa and Adam are ridiculously photogenic. Thanks for making us look good!

The waves were a’splashin’ but they didn’t mind one bit and were more then happy to get in there and giver’.

The lady with the hat was sitting on the white log but volunteered to move if we took her picture. Thank you lovely hat lady!

You can’t shake a stick at getting Spandy Andy in an engagement session.

Inukshuk. For the love of Peter, Paul and Mary, Inukshuk.

Ominous clouds. Amen.

So, that’s what jumps out to us about this post. It’s like having a hit of valium into your eyeballs. Enjoy.

Details aside, we met and this couple couldn’t have been a better match for us. In an roundabout way, they described to us that they wanted their wedding photography to be non-cheesy, non-cliche, and a bit different in terms of style. And to top it off, they wanted someone who was cool with shooting some of their wedding photos at an industrial park. They had us at “Hello“.

So, we agreed that they were awesome and we would be their go-to’s on their wedding date which is later in the summer.

That brings us to their engagement shoot, which was kind of a unique challenge. They wanted to get two different feels for their photos: Vancouver’s pristine nature and Vancouver’s city grit. Did we mention this couple was awesome or what?

So, today is nature engagement photography day. And because we had two very different and equally as solid streams of photos, tomorrow we will post the grittier city photos.

Thank you again Brittani and Darren for choosing us for your wedding. We’re looking forward to it.

Here’s your dose of nature…

Stanley Park and engagement photos go together better then – well – two things that go really well together. That’s where we took Brittani and Darren for their engagement shoot on the weekend.

Let’s just say that we’re excited about the results and leave the conversation at that. Here’s a teaser.

So the location was just beside the Fish House in Stanley Park, and it was a beautiful, beautiful affair. The couple was gorgeous and everything fell into place – even the weather!

To be honest though, it wasn’t really a typical wedding day for us. The reason why is it was super short (like 2 hours) and we were in and our like a fiddler’s elbow.

Anyways, we have an ocean of pictures to wade through, so for now we’ll just pop up these two as teasers. We will put up the full meal-deal another day…
