Akureyri Wedding Photographer

Amanda and Björn’s wedding brought two families together in Akureyri, Björn’s hometown on Iceland’s northern coast. Amanda’s family travelled from the United States for the occasion, and the wedding became a genuine meeting of cultures in one of the most beautiful settings in the country. The story of how we came to photograph this wedding goes back to our connection with Iceland itself, a place we have returned to many times for weddings, elopements, and personal projects.

A Local Wedding in Iceland’s Northern Capital

Akureyri is often called the capital of the north. It sits at the head of Eyjafjordur, Iceland’s longest fjord, surrounded by mountains that hold snow well into summer. The town has a population of around 19,000, which gives it a close-knit community feel while still offering the infrastructure for a proper celebration. Björn grew up here, and his local knowledge shaped every aspect of the day. The ceremony, the dinner, and the gathering afterwards all had a groundedness that comes from celebrating in a place you belong to. As an Akureyri wedding photographer, this kind of authenticity is what makes a wedding memorable to photograph.

What set this wedding apart from the destination elopements we typically photograph in Iceland was the depth of local connection. The guests knew the landscape. The venues had personal history. The toasts referenced places and people that were specific to this corner of the country. It was a reminder that Iceland is not just a backdrop for dramatic photographs but a place where real communities celebrate real milestones.

The Landscape Around Akureyri

The area surrounding Akureyri offers extraordinary variety for wedding photography. The fjord itself provides calm water reflections with mountain backdrops, and a short drive in any direction leads to waterfalls, volcanic terrain, or the geothermal areas near Lake Mývatn. For Amanda and Björn’s portraits, we used the light along the fjord in the hours around midnight, when the summer sun barely dips below the horizon. The golden light lasted for hours, and the couple walked along the waterfront while the mountains across the fjord turned pink and amber. Northern Iceland has a quality of light that is softer and more sustained than the south coast, and it is one of the reasons we consider Akureyri an exceptional location for weddings.

Planning a Wedding in Northern Iceland

Most visitors to Iceland focus on the south coast and the Golden Circle, which means northern Iceland remains quieter and more accessible for couples who want privacy and space. Akureyri has direct domestic flights from Reykjavík (45 minutes), and the town offers hotels, restaurants, and venues that can accommodate wedding groups comfortably. For couples considering an Iceland destination wedding away from the usual tourist routes, the north is well worth exploring. Get in touch if you want to discuss options.
