Dolomites Elopement // Chiara & Pietro
Dolomites Elopement
Chiara and Pietro eloped at Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Three limestone towers, 2,999 metres at the highest point, and a sunrise that turns the rock face orange for about twenty minutes before the light moves on. They stood in the middle of it and got married.
The Dolomites in northeastern Italy have become one of our most-visited mountain ranges for elopements. I have photographed couples across these peaks before, from Moa and Peter’s session to Dawn and Rob’s wedding, and the landscape never repeats itself the same way twice.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo Elopement
The day started with sunrise at Tre Cime, then moved into the valleys and alpine meadows below. Chiara and Pietro were easy to photograph because they were not performing. They were there for each other and the mountains were the setting, not the show.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo, also called Drei Zinnen or Three Peaks, is the most requested elopement location in the Dolomites. The rock formations are distinctive from every angle, and the terrain changes dramatically within a short hike. I have photographed here across different seasons, and the combination of scale, quiet, and alpine light is difficult to find anywhere else in the region.
The approach to Tre Cime begins at Rifugio Auronzo, and from there the trail wraps around the base of the three towers. We arrived before first light, which meant the couple had the entire landscape to themselves for nearly an hour. That solitude is rare in a place this famous, and it transformed the session. Without other hikers in the frame, the scale of the peaks became the entire story. Chiara and Pietro moved naturally through the landscape, stopping at points where the composition felt right, and the resulting photographs carry a stillness that mirrors the morning itself.
Passo di Giau at Golden Hour
After the sunrise session at Tre Cime, Chiara and Pietro drove to Passo di Giau for the second half of their elopement day. Passo di Giau sits at over 2,200 metres and offers wide, open views of the Dolomite peaks in every direction. The road itself is one of the most scenic mountain passes in the Alps, winding through meadows that turn gold in the late afternoon light. We timed the session to catch the last hour before sunset, when the peaks take on that warm, amber glow that the Dolomites are known for. The couple walked through the alpine grass with the Nuvolau and Averau peaks behind them, and the stillness at that altitude made the whole experience feel deeply personal.
Planning a Dolomites Elopement
The Dolomites are one of the most sought-after elopement destinations in Europe, and for good reason. The combination of dramatic peaks, alpine meadows, and well-maintained mountain roads makes it possible to reach extraordinary locations without technical climbing. For couples considering an elopement here, the key decisions come down to timing and location. Summer months (June through September) offer the best access to high-altitude passes and rifugios. Tre Cime requires an early start to beat the crowds, but the reward is a landscape that feels like the edge of the world. We have photographed multiple elopements across the Dolomites, and each one has been shaped by the specific peaks, the weather, and the couple’s willingness to explore.
