Betty and Jonathan’s wedding took place among the redwood trees of Northern California, and standing beneath those ancient trees with a couple exchanging vows was one of the most humbling experiences of our career. The redwoods are the tallest living things on earth, and being inside a redwood grove has a cathedral-like quality that no built structure can replicate. The light filters through the canopy in shafts, the forest floor is soft with fallen needles, and the silence is deep and total.

A Forest Ceremony in Northern California

The ceremony was held in a clearing surrounded by old-growth redwoods. The trees towered above the guests, and the scale of the setting gave the celebration a gravity that was immediately felt. Betty and Jonathan chose this location because it reflected their values: simplicity, nature, and a reverence for the environment. The ceremony needed no decoration beyond what the forest provided. As a redwood wedding photographer, the challenge is capturing the scale of the trees while keeping the couple as the emotional centre of the image. Wide compositions convey the environment, but the moments that matter most are often intimate and close.

The reception moved to a nearby venue where the celebration opened up. The contrast between the quiet solemnity of the forest ceremony and the joyful energy of the dinner and dancing gave the day a beautiful arc. Betty and Jonathan’s guests had travelled from around the world, and the combination of the California landscape and the warmth of the community created a wedding that felt both grounded and expansive.
