Jenny and Tobias got married across the middle of Stockholm on a summer day: the ceremony at the Lydmar Hotel, right on the water, then dinner across the harbour at Fotografiska. The city sits on a scatter of islands, so the water is never far from any of it, and it turned up behind them for most of the day. All city, no ballroom. That is how I like Stockholm best.

Stockholm

A quick word on the setting. The Lydmar sits on the harbour in the old centre, looking across at the islands, and Fotografiska is a former customs house on the opposite shore that is now a photography museum. Between the two there is a lot of Stockholm to walk through.

Getting ready at the Lydmar

Both of them got ready at the hotel, with the harbour out every window. There was champagne, there were nerves, and there was a lot of family around, including the smallest guests.

The first look

Jenny’s father saw her first, and then the two of them saw each other. Tobias went first, and did not hold it together.

The ceremony

Jenny’s father walked her in, and the ceremony happened in the courtyard in the middle of the hotel, guests standing close on every side, the family dog included. There were more tears than words, and it ended in a shower of petals.

The courtyard

Then it stayed in the courtyard for a good while. Drinks, a few words, and a long run of hugs and congratulations. It was the fullest, loudest stretch of the day, half of it laughing and half of it in tears.

Out in the city

After the ceremony I took Jenny for a few portraits inside, in the window light, and then took the two of them out into the city while the evening light was good. Stockholm in summer stays light late, and I used all of it, working along the walls and down by the water. By the time the two of them reached the harbour, the city lights had come on across the water.

Fotografiska

Dinner was at Fotografiska. Guests were waiting on the waterfront to clap Jenny and Tobias in, and then it moved inside, to a long room with the art on the walls and the whole city lit up through the windows. The speeches ran long, and by the end most of the room, Jenny included, had cried at least once.

Jenny and Tobias took the whole city for their wedding, from the Lydmar to Fotografiska. As a Stockholm wedding photographer, this is the day I point couples to when they ask what is possible.
