THE LONG WAY TO JUVETNina & Will

July 15, 2023

“From the very first email with Cole, we knew we were in good hands.”

Nina & Will

Nina and Will flew from the United States to a valley in western Norway to get married. That is not a simple thing to organise from six time zones away, but some places earn the effort, and the Juvet Landscape Hotel is one of them. A scatter of black glass cabins in the trees, a river running past, and mountains standing over the whole thing. A Juvet destination wedding is a lot of plane and a lot of planning, and worth every hour of it.

Juvet

Getting there is half the story. You fly into Ålesund, drive the fjord, and climb the Trollstigen, eleven hairpin bends stacked up a cliff with waterfalls coming down beside the road. Then the valley opens at Valldal and everything goes quiet. The cabins at Juvet are mostly glass, angled so you wake up looking at the river or the rock and nothing else.

Before the wedding

The morning started slowly and on foot. A few of them walked into the woods to pick flowers and herbs, dropped the lot into a pot over a fire, and brewed tea from what they had gathered. Later there was swimming in a river cold enough to make everyone shout. A wedding this far out stops being an afternoon and turns into a few days, and by the time the day itself arrived, nobody was a stranger.

Getting ready and the first look

Then the pace changed. Nina got ready in one cabin, Will in another. They met for a first look by an old red barn, and neither of them held it together, which is what you want. Whatever nerves were left went out of them right there.

The ceremony

They married on the grass by the river, mountains on every side and everyone they had flown out gathered in a loose ring around them. It was not a long ceremony, but it was a full one. Vows read close and quiet, rings, tears, and more laughing than most. A setting like that could swallow a couple whole. These two held the middle of it without trying.

Into the wild

With the vows done, I stole them for an hour. The river, the forest, a turf-roofed cabin with a mountain parked behind it. This is what they had come for, the two of them small in a landscape that big, and it delivered.

The red dress

Then Nina disappeared and came back in red. After a day of white against all that green, the red landed like a change of key. It carried her through the rest of the night, the dance floor included.

The barn

Dinner was in an old wooden barn: long speeches, longer toasts, and the loose, grateful mood of a room where everyone has travelled a long way to be there.

The last light and the dancing

Norway in June barely goes dark, so the dancing moved outside and kept going under a sky that would not quit. The one I keep coming back to is Will and his mother, out on the grass with the mountains behind them, dancing to I Hope You Dance. Everyone stopped to watch. So did I. Nina and Will had their own dance too, but that first one belonged to his mum.

Nina and Will crossed an ocean and a mountain range to get married in a glass cabin in the woods, and they were right to. If you are considering the same, there are two more Juvet weddings in the journal: another wedding at the Juvet Landscape Hotel with Ida and James, and Justyna and Jarrod’s from a few years earlier. Three now, and I still have not run out of things to point a camera at up there.
