Madeira Elopement // Styrmir & Heiðdís
Styrmir and Heiðdís’ Madeira Elopement Session
Styrmir and Heiðdís are friends from our years working in Iceland. When they decided to elope in Madeira, they asked us to come along. No crowd, no ceremony hall. An island in the Atlantic, two days of shooting, and a couple who already knew what they wanted.
A Sunrise to Remember
First stop was Miradouro do Guindaste before sunrise. The light came up fast over the Atlantic, the cliffs caught it from below, and Styrmir and Heiðdís stood at the edge of it looking east. Madeira mornings move quickly. You either catch them or you miss them.
From Coast to Cliffs
After sunrise, we drove west along Madeira’s winding coastal roads. The island is compact enough that you can cover real ground in a single day, but varied enough that every stop feels like a different world. Our next location was Miradouro do Véu da Noiva, a viewpoint overlooking a waterfall that drops directly into the ocean. The cliffs here are sheer and green, with mist rising from the base. Styrmir and Heiðdís are both photographers themselves, so they understood the light instinctively and moved through the landscape with an ease that made every frame feel natural.
We continued to Seixal, where volcanic black sand meets turquoise water in natural rock pools. It is one of Madeira’s best-kept secrets and rarely crowded, even in peak season. The contrast between the dark sand and the bright Atlantic made for some of the most striking images of the day. By late afternoon, we had reached the western tip of the island and the lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo, where the sun sets directly over open ocean. It was the perfect closing to a Madeira elopement that covered the island from coast to coast.
Why Madeira for an Elopement
Madeira sits in the Atlantic roughly 1,000 kilometres southwest of Lisbon, and its microclimate means mild temperatures year-round. The island offers volcanic coastline, laurel forests (a UNESCO World Heritage site), mountain peaks above the clouds, and a network of levada walking trails that wind through terrain unlike anything on the European mainland. For couples considering a Madeira elopement, the best months are April through October. The island is easy to reach from most European airports, and the relatively small size means you can visit five or six distinct locations in a single day without spending hours in the car.
Madeira has become one of our favourite elopement destinations. The variety of landscapes within a short driving distance is remarkable, and the light quality, especially at sunrise and sunset along the northern coast, rivals anything we’ve seen in Iceland or the Dolomites. We’ve photographed several weddings and elopements on Madeira, and each one has found something different on the island. For Styrmir and Heiðdís, it was about reconnecting away from the demands of running their own photography business in Iceland, and Madeira gave them the space to do exactly that.
If a Madeira elopement is something you are considering, we would love to hear from you. We handle location scouting, timing, and logistics so you can focus on the experience. Whether you want a single sunrise session or a full day covering multiple corners of the island, we build each itinerary around the couple and the season. Madeira rewards flexibility, and that is exactly how we work. Reach out and we can start planning your own Madeira elopement adventure together.
