South Iceland Elopement // Sophia & Tanveer

South Iceland Elopement

Sophia and Tanveer had been planning their South Iceland elopement for quite some time, with one aim in mind: a visual adventure exploring Iceland’s south coast gems. They came to the right place, as we’ve photographed all around Iceland. From Akureyri to Snæfellsnes, we’ve covered virtually all corners of the island.

With plans in place, our first step was their sunrise ceremony on the iconic Black Sand Beach at Reynisfjara. A special touch was the Ásatrú element – it’s quite special anytime an Icelandic pagan wedding happens, so Sophia and Tanveer were in good hands for this. The morning light painted the beach in soft hues, and the atmosphere for their vows needed nothing else.

Time to Explore

Once the ceremony was complete, we put the adventure to work. We started by getting to Skógafoss early – before the crowds of tourists took over – and then visited Dyrhólaey. Again, the key was beating the tourists, because they can be everywhere. But on this day, the clouds parted, the wind ceased, and even the tourists let up. So we just went for it, and it turned out beautifully. The couple’s adventurous spirit shone through as they explored these locations.

Our trip took us to the eastern shores of Iceland’s south coast, as we ventured to the iconic beaches of Stokksnes. The dramatic mountain backdrop here provided some of the best shots of the day. Along the way, of course we had to visit Jökulsárlón for a (freezing!) quick stop for photos. The floating icebergs made for an otherworldly backdrop.

Planning a South Iceland Elopement

South Iceland is one of the most sought-after elopement destinations in the world, and for good reason. The region packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a relatively short driving distance. Within a single day, couples can exchange vows on a black sand beach, stand beneath a thundering waterfall, walk along a glacial lagoon, and watch the sun set behind volcanic peaks. The south coast is also more accessible than the remote highlands or the Westfjords, making it ideal for couples who want dramatic scenery without extreme logistics.

For those considering a south Iceland elopement, the best months are May through September, when daylight stretches well past midnight and most highland roads are open. That said, shoulder-season elopements in April or October can offer snow-dusted landscapes and fewer visitors. We always recommend building in a second day for portraits, as Sophia and Tanveer did here, because the weather can shift quickly and having flexibility means we never miss the good light. If you want to include an Icelandic ceremony tradition like Sophia and Tanveer’s Ásatrú blessing, we can connect you with local officiants who specialise in traditional Norse rituals.

Our Favourite South Iceland Locations

Every south Iceland elopement we photograph includes a custom location plan. For Sophia and Tanveer, the route included Reynisfjara, Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey, Jökulsárlón, and Stokksnes. Each location offers something different: Reynisfjara brings raw, moody drama with its basalt columns and crashing waves. Skógafoss delivers sheer scale, a 60-metre curtain of water that catches the morning light. Dyrhólaey gives elevation and panoramic views of the coastline. Jökulsárlón is otherworldly, with icebergs calving into still water. And Stokksnes, backed by the jagged Vestrahorn mountain, is one of the most cinematic beaches in Iceland. We know the timing for each of these spots, when the light is best and when the crowds are thinnest, so every couple gets the space they deserve.

It was a South Iceland elopement to remember, and Sophia and Tanveer toughed it out for two days of photos. Their energy and excitement never wavered, even during the long drives between locations. Every stop brought something new, from black sand to glacial ice, and the couple embraced it all with open arms.
