A DOLOMITES ELOPEMENTYuliia & Gunnar

Yuliia and Gunnar met at one of my Way Up North events, the year we held it in Berlin. She is from Ukraine, he is from Iceland, and they have been inseparable since that week. They live together in Iceland now. This was our day in the Dolomites, and it was a wild one.

We started at Passo Giau, under the peaks, then drove up to Rifugio Lagazuoi for the view, which is one of the best in the Alps. We finished back on the far side of the pass, fishing, as the sun went down.

Black and white, straight out of camera

Everything here is black and white, straight out of camera. Unedited JPEGs, handed over as they are. I have the raw files and could turn any of them to colour, but I love the pure black and white. It strips away the complications and leaves you with the composition and the two people in front of the camera. That is how I like to work.

Passo Giau to Lagazuoi

Passo Giau is one of the high passes in the Dolomites, meadows and pointed peaks in every direction. Rifugio Lagazuoi is a short drive away, at over two and a half thousand metres, reached by the cable car at Passo Falzarego, with a terrace above the whole range. We photographed at both, then dropped back down for the last of the light.

The plan was to end the day fishing, on the far side of Passo Giau, so that is where we finished, in the last of the sun.
