Dolomites Wedding Photographer

Dawn and Rob chose the Dolomites for their elopement, and their day covered three of the region’s most iconic locations: Cinque Torri, Lago di Braies, and Passo di Giau. What made this particular elopement stand out was the couple’s willingness to commit to a full day in the mountains, starting before sunrise and finishing as the last light faded from the peaks. The Dolomites reward that kind of dedication, and Dawn and Rob’s images reflect the range of conditions and moods that a single day in these mountains can hold.

Cinque Torri at First Light

Cinque Torri is a cluster of five rock towers that rise from a high alpine meadow near Cortina d’Ampezzo. The formations are remnants of ancient reef systems, eroded into pillars that look almost sculptural against the sky. We began the day here in the blue hour before dawn, when the towers were silhouetted against a sky that shifted from deep blue to pink as the sun approached the horizon. Dawn and Rob stood among the boulders at the base of the towers while the first light hit the uppermost rocks. The scale of these formations is difficult to convey in words, and the solitude at that hour made the experience feel genuinely private.

Cinque Torri is also a popular climbing destination, and the trails around the base of the towers pass old World War I trenches and fortifications that add a layer of history to the landscape. For Dawn and Rob, the combination of geological drama and human history gave the location a weight that went beyond visual beauty. The open meadow around the towers meant we could shoot from multiple angles as the light changed, and the variety of backgrounds within a small area made this single stop feel like several different locations.

Lago di Braies and the Morning Light

From Cinque Torri we drove to Lago di Braies, arriving before the car park filled. The lake’s emerald water sat perfectly still beneath Croda del Becco, and the morning light was soft and even. Dawn and Rob walked along the shoreline and out onto the wooden boathouse dock, where the reflections doubled every element of the scene. Braies is a place that delivers consistency for a Dolomites wedding photographer: the colour of the water, the framing of the mountains, and the quality of the early light combine to produce images that are reliably striking. The key is always timing. Arriving early makes the difference between a crowded tourist scene and a private moment.

Passo di Giau at Sunset

The final chapter of the day unfolded at Passo di Giau, where the alpine meadows turned gold in the evening light. At 2,236 metres, the pass offers panoramic views of the surrounding Dolomite peaks, and the open terrain allows couples to move freely through the landscape. Dawn and Rob walked through the grass as the shadows lengthened and the Nuvolau peak caught the last of the sun. The transition from the dramatic rock formations of Cinque Torri to the open stillness of Giau gave the day a narrative arc that felt complete. For couples considering the Dolomites, this combination of locations demonstrates the variety available within a single day of driving.

The road to Passo di Giau climbs through a series of switchbacks that offer increasingly expansive views with every turn. Arriving at the summit in the late afternoon, the temperature dropped and the air was sharp and clear. These conditions are typical of high-altitude Dolomites sessions in summer, and they contribute to the crisp, saturated colour that defines mountain photography at this elevation.
