A FJORD ELOPEMENT AT HOTEL UNION ØYEAmy & Ben
Amy and Ben got married in Ålesund and then took a boat down the fjord to spend their wedding night at Hotel Union Øye.
It is one of the better ideas a couple has brought to me. Marry in the morning in the art nouveau town, trade the crowds for a slow wooden boat and a bottle of something cold, and spend a few hours of Norwegian fjord getting to dinner at a hotel that has been standing at the end of it for well over a century.
If you are looking at a Hotel Union Øye wedding, this is roughly the shape of it: two towns, one long fjord, and a hotel that feels borrowed from another century. Amy and Ben’s guest list was the two of them and a boat crew. Everything else was Norway.
It started in Ålesund
Ålesund is the town that burned down in 1904 and rebuilt itself, all at once, in art nouveau.
So the whole place matches: turrets, spires, colour, all of it doubled in the harbour. Amy and Ben got ready at Hotel Brosundet down by the water, and married later in the day with the town behind them.
Vows by the water
They said their vows outside, by the water, with almost nobody around.
Ben read his, then Amy read hers, then the rings, in the plain and enormous way that only happens when there is no audience to perform for. Ten minutes, and they were married.

By boat, into the fjords
Then the good part: a wooden boat, and the whole afternoon to get to Øye.
Out of Ålesund, past the lighthouses, into the Hjørundfjord, where the mountains come straight up out of the water and the cloud sits low on them. There was champagne and a table laid in the cabin, and long stretches of just standing on deck watching Norway go by.

Øye
Øye is a scatter of red boathouses and old farms at the head of the fjord, under a wall of mountains.
There is a waterfall behind the village big enough to make two people look like nothing at all, and fields that were green and soft and full of the evening. Amy and Ben walked it before dinner.

Hotel Union Øye
Hotel Union Øye has been putting people up at the end of this fjord since the 1890s, and it looks it, in the best way.
Dark wood, oil paintings, antiques in every corner, staff in traditional dress, a grand piano in the salon, and a dinner that took its time. A Hotel Union Øye wedding is really a night in a place that has barely changed in a hundred and thirty years, which is the whole reason to come.

The fjord, and a swing
The evening ran long, the way it does that far north in summer.
Still water with the mountains doubled in it, a walk up the hillside above the fjord, and a swing rigged on a rope that puts you out over the whole thing. Amy went first.

Cake, and the light going
They cut the cake back on the boat, somewhere in the middle of the fjord.
By then the light had gone long and orange, the way it does up there in summer, and the last hour was just the two of them on deck, married, going home the way they came.

If you want a wedding that is mostly Norway, this is the shape of it: a town, a boat, a fjord, and a hotel that feels borrowed from another century. Amy and Ben kept the guest list to two and gave the day to the country, and got a wedding that could only have happened here.
