Madeira Wedding Photographer
Faye and Laurie came to Madeira for an elopement session that took us across two of the island’s most dramatic landscapes. If their names look familiar, you may have seen their Puglia wedding on this blog. This time, the setting was completely different: volcanic cliffs, ancient laurel forests, and the open Atlantic stretching to the horizon. Madeira has become one of our favourite islands to photograph, and Faye and Laurie’s session is a perfect example of why.
Ponta de São Lourenço
The eastern tip of Madeira narrows into a rugged peninsula called Ponta de São Lourenço. Unlike the lush green that covers most of the island, this stretch is exposed and wind-carved, with red and ochre rock formations dropping steeply into the sea. The trail runs along the spine of the peninsula with water visible on both sides, and the light shifts constantly as clouds move across the cliffs. We photographed Faye and Laurie along this path as the morning sun lit up the volcanic rock, and the contrast between the warm stone and the deep blue Atlantic created images with extraordinary colour and depth.
São Lourenço is best photographed early in the morning before the trail becomes busy with hikers. The peninsula is fully exposed to the elements, so the wind can be strong and the conditions change rapidly. That unpredictability is part of what makes it such a compelling location for elopement photography. Nothing about it feels staged or controlled. The landscape is raw and honest, and couples who choose it tend to be drawn to that energy.
The Ancient Laurel Forest of Fanal
From the coast we drove up into the mountains to Fanal, a section of the Laurisilva forest that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trees here are centuries old, twisted into sculptural forms by wind and time, and the forest floor is often covered in low cloud that rolls in from the valleys below. The atmosphere is unlike anything else on the island. When the mist is thick, the trees appear and disappear in the grey light, and the entire landscape takes on a quiet, almost dreamlike quality. Faye and Laurie moved through the forest together and the fog wrapped around them in a way that made every frame feel like it belonged to a different world.
This session was part of a photography workshop we hosted on Madeira, which gave us extended time on the island to explore locations beyond the well-known viewpoints. Fanal in particular rewards patience. The fog comes and goes in cycles, and the best frames often arrive in the moments between full cloud cover and clearing. Working with Faye and Laurie in that environment felt collaborative and unhurried, and the images reflect that calm.
Madeira as an Elopement Destination
Madeira offers a combination of landscapes that is difficult to match anywhere in Europe. Within a single day you can move from sea-level volcanic coastline to cloud-level ancient forest, and the island’s compact size means travel between locations rarely takes more than an hour. The climate is mild year-round, which makes it a reliable choice for elopements in any season. Direct flights connect Madeira to most major European cities, and the local infrastructure for weddings and elopements is well established. We have photographed on Madeira multiple times and consider it one of the strongest options for couples looking for a destination elopement in Portugal.
