Dolomites Wedding Photographer

Moa and Peter chose the Dolomites for their elopement, and their day took us from the still waters of Lago di Braies at dawn to the sweeping mountain pass of Passo di Giau at sunset. The Dolomites reward couples who are willing to start early and move through multiple locations, and Moa and Peter embraced that fully. Their day was a genuine adventure through some of the most striking terrain in the Italian Alps.

Lago di Braies at Sunrise

Lago di Braies is one of the most recognisable lakes in the Dolomites, and for good reason. The emerald water sits beneath the sheer face of Croda del Becco, and in the early morning the surface is perfectly still. We arrived before the first tour groups, which gave Moa and Peter the shoreline to themselves. The light at that hour is soft and directional, and the reflections on the water doubled the mountain scene in every frame. It is a location that requires minimal intervention from a photographer. The landscape does the work, and the couple needs to be present in it.

The wooden boathouse at the southern end of the lake is one of the most photographed structures in the Alps, and we used it as a natural anchor point in several compositions. Beyond the lake itself, the surrounding trails lead into dense forest that offers a completely different mood. Moa and Peter explored both, and the variety between open water and enclosed woodland gave the morning session a natural arc that felt unhurried and complete.

Passo di Giau and the Golden Hour

Later in the day we drove up to Passo di Giau, one of the highest and most scenic mountain passes in the region. At over 2,200 metres, the views open up in every direction: the Nuvolau, Averau, and Marmolada peaks are all visible, and the alpine meadows take on a warm golden tone in the late afternoon. Moa and Peter walked through the grass together as the shadows lengthened across the valley, and the resulting images carry a warmth and intimacy that reflects the quiet of the mountains at that hour. As a Dolomites wedding photographer, these transitions between locations and light conditions are what make a full-day elopement so rewarding to capture.

The drive up to Passo di Giau is itself part of the experience. The road climbs through hairpin bends with views that improve with every turn, and arriving at the summit feels like stepping into a different world. For couples who want their elopement to feel like a genuine journey rather than a single static location, the combination of Braies in the morning and Giau in the evening creates a day with real narrative structure.

Behind the Scenes with Fujifilm

This session was shot on the Fujifilm X-T5, and the film at the bottom of this post was created by Marq Riley. The Fujifilm colour science is well suited to the Dolomites. The greens, blues, and warm earth tones of the landscape translate beautifully through the sensor, and the compact size of the system makes it ideal for mountain work where every gram matters. We have been shooting Fujifilm for years and it remains our preferred system for destination elopements.
