Sarah and Neil’s wedding on Salina, one of the Aeolian Islands off the north coast of Sicily, was a celebration set against the volcanic landscape of one of Italy’s most beautiful and least visited archipelagos. Salina is the greenest of the Aeolian Islands, known for its capers, Malvasia wine, and the twin volcanic peaks that define its silhouette from the sea. The island featured in the film Il Postino, and spending time there it is easy to understand why it captured a filmmaker’s imagination.

The Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian archipelago consists of seven volcanic islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Each has its own character, from the active volcano of Stromboli to the thermal springs of Vulcano. Salina sits in the centre and offers the most lush and cultivated landscape of the group. The terraced hillsides, the whitewashed villages, and the views across the water to the neighbouring islands create a setting that feels authentically Mediterranean without the crowds that characterise the Italian mainland coast. For a destination wedding, Salina provides an intimacy and a sense of discovery that larger Italian destinations cannot match.

As a Salina wedding photographer, the island’s compact size works in your favour. The harbour, the hillside villages, and the coastal paths are all accessible within minutes, and the light over the water changes constantly throughout the day. Sarah and Neil’s celebration made use of the outdoor spaces and the views across to Lipari and Panarea, and the warmth of the island community added a generosity to the day that felt genuinely Italian.

Planning a Wedding in the Aeolian Islands

Reaching Salina requires a hydrofoil or ferry from Milazzo on the Sicilian coast, which takes approximately 90 minutes. The journey itself is part of the experience, and guests arriving by sea get their first view of the volcanic peaks from the water. For couples considering a destination wedding in Italy that feels genuinely off the beaten path, the Aeolian Islands are exceptional. Get in touch if Salina or the surrounding islands interest you. A Volcanic Archipelago

Visiting the Aeolian Islands is pure magic so if you’re searching for a Salina wedding photographer or a place to host a destination wedding, Salina is wholeheartedly recommended. While we have been nearby before (we came close a few times when visiting Lipari), we’ve never visited Salina itself so this was an exciting experience. This windswept gem tucked away in a volcanic archipelago off the coast of Sicily is somewhere we’ll always want to return to – weddings or otherwise (but hopefully more weddings).

Sarah and Neil came from a long ways away to be there. With family and friends jumping on planes, buses and boats, their entire crew traveled from Australia to the middle of nowhere for an amazing weekend of partying and fun. They couldn’t have picked a more beautiful spot, and the amazing staff at Capofaro left everyone wanting more of their luxurious properties. So for the aspiring Salina wedding photographer out there, mark this venue on your wishlist – it’s amazing.

Sweaty Morning Start

Of the many highlights this stunner of a destination wedding had, it was the morning workout that really caught our eye. Being avid fitness buffs, Sarah and Neil “strongly encouraged” their guests to join them in a fairly intense morning fitness jam. Some may have started in rough condition, but by the end of the workout, it lifted the mood and set the tone for an awesome wedding day. It’s one of those this really sucks at the time things with pure satisfaction afterwards. Highly recommend the morning activity for everyone planning a wedding – even if it seems like a terrible idea on paper, everyone will be happy they did it.
