Elisabeth and Julius planned a full wedding day across the Dolomites, and the mountains delivered the best of everything they have. We started in the dark below Tre Cime di Lavaredo, watched the sunrise light the north faces, spent the middle of the day at Rifugio Lagazuoi above Passo Falzarego, and finished with sunset at Passo Giau. Days like this one are the reason I keep coming back to this range.

Then the horses arrived. A whole band of them, foal included, grazing their way across the meadow below the towers while Elisabeth and Julius stood in the middle of it. Nothing about it was planned and nothing about it could be repeated. We stayed with them a long time.

From Tre Cime we drove to Passo Falzarego and rode up to Rifugio Lagazuoi, which holds some of the most ridiculous views in the Alps. The front line of the First World War ran straight through this mountain, and you can still walk the tunnels. Up top it is scree, cliff edges and a sea of peaks in every direction.

We ended at Passo Giau, and the sunset went pure gold. No wind, no crowds left, just the two of them on the meadows under Ra Gusela while the light burned down.
