Lago di Braies Wedding // Alissa & Alexej

Lago di Braies Wedding

Alissa and Alexej chose Lago di Braies for their wedding morning, and it is easy to see why. The Dolomites sit right behind the lake, the water is still before sunrise, and the whole place feels like it belongs to you at that hour. We took the wooden boats out first, then found the old log cabin on the shore for something quieter. No crowds, no schedule. Just the two of them and a lake that looked different every time the light shifted.

Lago di Braies at Sunrise

Lago di Braies is one of the most photographed lakes in the Dolomites, and for good reason. The emerald water reflects the Croda del Becco massif in near-perfect symmetry, and the iconic wooden boathouse at the southern shore has become synonymous with the region. But the lake draws serious crowds. By 9am in summer, the paths are packed and the boat queue stretches back along the shore. That is why we arrived before dawn. At 5am, Alissa and Alexej had the entire lake to themselves. The wooden rowing boats were still tied at the dock, the water was glassy, and the first light was just beginning to catch the peaks above. We pushed out onto the lake in silence, and those first twenty minutes produced some of the most peaceful images we have ever captured in the Dolomites.

Santa Maddalena at Sunset

After the morning session at Lago di Braies, we drove south toward Val di Funes. The village of Santa Maddalena sits at the base of the Odle mountain group, and the view from the church of St. Johann is one of the most recognised landscapes in the Italian Alps. The green meadows, the wooden fences, the spire of the church, and the jagged Dolomite peaks behind it all combine into something that looks almost painted. We timed our arrival for the last hour of daylight, when the mountains turn from grey to pink and the valley fills with long shadows. Alissa and Alexej walked through the meadow as the light shifted, and the warmth of that final hour gave the images a softness that balanced the drama of the morning.

Planning a Lago di Braies Wedding or Elopement

Lago di Braies sits in South Tyrol, the German-speaking northeastern corner of Italy. The nearest airports are Innsbruck (90 minutes) and Venice (2.5 hours), and the surrounding towns of Braies, Dobbiaco, and Cortina d’Ampezzo offer accommodation ranging from alpine guesthouses to luxury hotels. For a Lago di Braies wedding or elopement, timing is everything. Early morning access is essential if you want the lake without crowds, and we recommend combining the lake with at least one other Dolomites location to make the most of your day. Popular pairings include Cinque Torri or Giau Pass, Seceda, or the Tre Cime di Lavaredo area.

We have photographed multiple elopements and weddings across the Dolomites, and each couple brings a different vision. Whether you want a symbolic ceremony on the lakeshore, a hike to a mountain pass for your vows, or a full-day adventure covering three or four locations, we build every itinerary around you. The Dolomites reward early mornings and late evenings, and we plan accordingly.

South Tyrol also makes Lago di Braies weddings easy from a legal perspective. Symbolic ceremonies require no Italian paperwork, and the legal registration can be handled at home. For couples who want a legally binding ceremony in Italy, the nearest registry offices are in Dobbiaco and Brunico. We work with local wedding planners who handle the documentation, translation, and venue permits so that your day runs smoothly from start to finish. If you are considering the Dolomites, Lago di Braies is the place to begin. See more of our Italian wedding photography: a Dolomites elopement, Lake Como wedding, and Salina wedding.
