Norway Destination Wedding // Nicola & Cato
Norway Destination Wedding
Nicola and Cato travelled from Australia for a Norway destination wedding at Noreheim in Norefjell, a mountaintop venue roughly two hours northwest of Oslo. The choice to bring family and friends from the other side of the world to a mountain lodge in Norway says everything about what this couple valued: landscape, intimacy, and a celebration that felt connected to Cato’s Norwegian roots. The venue sits at elevation with panoramic views across the Norefjell mountain range, and on a clear day the sight lines stretch for miles in every direction.
Noreheim at Norefjell
Noreheim is a traditional Norwegian mountain lodge that has been thoughtfully updated while retaining the warmth and character of its original architecture. The timber interiors, the stone fireplaces, and the terraces that look out over the valley create a venue that feels both grand and welcoming. For a destination wedding, the property functions as a self-contained retreat: guests stay on site, meals are served communally, and the surrounding trails and mountain roads provide natural settings for portraits throughout the day. Nicola and Cato’s celebration used every part of the venue, from the ceremony on the terrace to the dinner inside and the late-night gathering around the fire.
Mountain Weddings in Norway
Norway’s mountain regions offer some of the most dramatic wedding locations in Scandinavia. The combination of altitude, clean air, and expansive views creates a setting that photographs beautifully in any season. In summer, the long northern days mean portraits can continue well into the evening, and the light at elevation has a clarity that is difficult to find at sea level. Norefjell in particular benefits from its proximity to Oslo, making it accessible for international guests while still feeling genuinely remote. For couples considering a Norway destination wedding, the mountain lodges and fjord-side venues in this part of the country offer a range of options. We’re slightly obsessed with Norway. Whether we’re flying to the jewel of the Arctic in Lofoten or any of the other amazing places, every Norway destination wedding we do feels like a dream. Norway truly is blessed with endless scenery.
Nicola and Cato’s wedding was a fresh new spin on our Norwegian adventures. We’ve never been to a mountain setting like this before in Norway, and certainly never to Noreheim which is in Norefjell.
We loved how Nicola described her wedding, as she could put it into words much better than we could. So below, have a read about how she described the stunner from Norway.
Norway Destination Wedding
Words By Nicola
Our wedding was the one chance for us to gather our friends and family from literally opposite ends of the world, from Norway and (mostly) Australia. The mountainside location and the venue with its traditional Norwegian grass-roofed houses created a natural, laid-back and romantic atmosphere – it was the perfect setting. There were some Viking inspired braids, drinking horns and the trading of gifts.
On arrival we gave each guest a wooden rune symbol of either love, happiness, and health, these gifts were returned to a fire forging the bond between us and our loved ones. Overall it was a fun, intimate and very emotional night. The euphoria from having all our dearest together, celebrating not only our love for each other but also the special bonds between us and everyone there, was overwhelming and quite simply magical.
Scenic, Emotional, Intimate
When we asked Nicola to put her wedding into three key words, scenic, emotional and intimate were her picks. Viewing the story start to finish, that’s exactly what it was.
Scenic is an obvious one. When you’re visiting such a location, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with photography options. You’re constantly pulling over to take a photo of a new fjord at every turn.
Emotional is spot on, and a consistent thing whenever we think of Australian weddings. Another Australian wedding in Salina comes to mind when we think of this, as it was equally packed full of emotions.
And of course, intimate. While there we many people gathered in such a grand place, it did feel like an intimate Norway destination wedding. When you’re with ones you love and every moment of the day goes by so quickly, you tend to cherish those little moments and the intimate vibe is definitely felt.
